Here’s what you need to know before hitting the track:
- Choose the right tire compound: Sand requires tall, open knobs; hardpack terrain calls for shorter, firm knobs.
- Check your rim size: Motocross typically uses a 19-inch rear tire, while enduro bikes run on 18-inch rims.
- Keep tire pressure low: Ride between 1.0 and 1.4 bar for optimal tire footprint and grip.
- Replace your tires on time: Don’t wait until the knobs crack; rounded knobs already mean significant power loss.

No tire excels on every terrain. That’s why you should tailor your choice to the tracks you ride most. The Dunlop Geomax-series is the absolute favorite in MXGP and stands out for its predictable corner grip. If you’re looking for a tire with an extremely tough carcass and knobs that won’t crack easily on harder tracks, then the Michelin Starcross (like the Starcross 6) is your best option.
For riders looking for maximum traction in deep sand ruts or mud, the Pirelli Scorpion MX Soft delivers ironclad grip thanks to its lug design. We recommend running front and rear tires from the same brand for a neutral balance on your motorcycle.
Sand, intermediate, or hardpack: tailor your tire profile to the track
In the Netherlands and Belgium, you can’t avoid heavy sand tracks, like those in Lommel or Lierop. Here, you need a soft-compound tire with tall, widely spaced knobs. This open profile ensures sand is immediately flung away, keeping the tire self-cleaning.
Riding on harder clay tracks or variable terrain? Then choose an intermediate tire. These all-around tires have extra support knobs on the side to prevent knobs from bending on hard sections. Avoid riding a sand tire on a hard, rocky track — you’ll tear the knobs off within an hour.
Tire fitment and installation: avoid the biggest mistakes in the workshop
Nothing is more frustrating than a tire that doesn’t fit your rim or rubs against your swingarm. Therefore, first secure your motorcycle on a sturdy motorbok and always use our partsfinder to find the exact size for your brand, model, and production year. A 110/90-19 rear tire is the standard for a 250cc four-stroke, while a 450cc often uses a wider 120/80-19 tire.
Also pay attention to tire type: our motocross tires are Tube Type (TT), which means you always need a binnenband inner tube or a mousse to install them. Hoe vaak moet ik een motorcross buitenband vervangen?
Gemiddeld vervang je een buitenband elke 5 tot 15 draaiuren. Wedstrijdrijders wisselen veel sneller om altijd de scherpste noppen te hebben. Zodra de noppen aan de acceleratiezijde rond beginnen te slijten, verlies je direct tractie.

Het staat op de zijkant in het formaat: 80/100-21, 110/90-19, etc.

Hoeveel bar moet er in een crossmotor buitenband?
In de motorcross rijden we met een lage bandenspanning voor maximale grip. Richtlijn is tussen de 1.0 en 1.2 bar voor zachte banen, en tot 1.4 bar op harde banen om stootlekken te voorkomen.

Wat betekenen de cijfers op de zijkant van mijn buitenband?
De cijfers geven de exacte maatvoering aan. Bij een maat zoals 110/90-19 staat '110' voor de breedte van de band in millimeters. De '90' geeft de hoogte aan als percentage van de breedte. De '19' staat voor de velgdiameter in inches. De aanduiding 'TT' betekent Tube Type, wat aangeeft dat er een binnenband of mousse in moet.

Heb ik een binnenband of een mousse nodig?
Onder de meeste crossbanden moet een binnenband of een mousse gemonteerd worden omdat ze Tube Type (TT) zijn. Een binnenband is voordelig en hiermee kun je de bandenspanning zelf aanpassen. Een mousse is van schuimrubber en biedt de garantie dat je tijdens een manche nooit meer lek rijdt.
