Buying a motocross spill mat: The key points outlined
Before you add a new mat to your cart, it’s a good idea to keep the following specifications in mind:
- Absorbency: Choose a mat that can absorb a significant amount of moisture. The guideline is 1 to 1,5 liters per square meter.
- Fluid-proof underlayer: A sturdy rubber or PVC backing is essential. This prevents trapped oil from seeping into the sand or your garage floor.
- FIM-goedkeuring: Check the certification. A FIM-approved mat guarantees that you meet international competition standards and will pass every inspection without issues.
- Proper dimensions: Opt for standard competition sizes like 180x80 cm or 200x100 cm. Your motorcycle will fit comfortably, and you’ll still have plenty of space for your tool kit and tools.
Why a FIM-approved mat isn’t a luxury
Your engine block gets very grimy. Sometimes a gasket will seep fluid, a drop of oil will leak out, or you’ll accidentally spill some coolant when refilling in the paddock. Motorsport governing bodies no longer allow any ground contamination at all. A FIM-approved mat prevents this.
The top layer of durable nylon or polyester is designed to absorb fluids extremely quickly. The 100% impermeable underlayer then hermetically seals all trapped contents.
Don’t think you can get away with using an old tarp or a mat full of tears. If you use a mat that leaks or is visibly damaged, the technical inspection will immediately remove you from the participant list.
The benefits of a pit mat
At the track, we refer to it as an environmental mat due to the strict rules. At home in the workshop, mechanics more often call it a pit mat or garage mat. The function stays exactly the same. It keeps sand, brake cleaner, chain spray, and grease off your clean garage floor.
A good pit mat also provides extra grip right away. The thick anti-slip underlayer ensures that your tool kit doesn’t slide away when you lift the heavy motocross onto it.
Many of these mats are relatively easy to clean. Brush off the worst grime dry or spray it gently clean. Always check the manufacturer’s specific washing instructions to make sure the mat doesn’t lose its absorption capacity.
