Cross steering

A bent handlebar after a hard crash or sore forearms from incorrect riding posture. Your motocross handlebars take the hardest impacts and directly determine how you steer the motorcycle over the track’s bumps. A handlebar is more than just a tube to hold onto; it's your most important control point for balance and grip.

At MXProStoreParts, you’ll find a wide selection of motocross handlebars from top brands like Renthal and ProTaper. Whether you’re replacing a standard 22mm tube or switching to a stiffer Fatbar handlebar, we have the correct size in stock. Use our partsfinder tool right away to see which handlebars fit your motorcycle. Pick the right bend, tighten it securely, and line up at the starting gate with confidence again this coming weekend.

Buying a motocross handlebar: The key points listed

This is what you need to know before installing a new handlebar on your motorcycle triple clamp:

  • Choose the correct diameter: Check whether your current handlebar clamps are designed for a 22mm or 28mm handlebar.
  • Pay attention to the backsweep: A less pronounced backsweep will force your elbows upward more easily in the attack position.
  • Choose the correct height: Are you tall? Choose a taller handlebar to stand comfortably on the footpegs without leaning too far forward.
  • Crossbar: A handlebar with a crossbar offers extra stiffness. Handlebars without a crossbar have slightly more flex and absorb vibrations better.
  • Material: Almost all modern handlebars are made from strong, lightweight aluminum. Never bend a bent aluminum handlebar back straight—replace it immediately.

The difference: 22mm vs 28mm (Fatbar handlebar)

The diameter of your handlebar determines its stiffness and fit on your motorcycle. A standard 22mm handlebar (7/8 inch) is often found on older motorcycles or as factory equipment on entry-level models. This type is affordable and offers slightly more flexibility. This is ideal for reducing hand vibrations on hard-packed tracks.

If you ride harder, take larger jumps, or bend your handlebar regularly, a 28mm handlebar is the better choice. We often refer to this as a Fatbar handlebar in the workshop. The center section at the clamps is 28.6mm thick and tapers down to 22mm at the grips, so your throttle and handvatten will fit properly. This makes the handlebar significantly stiffer and stronger. Just keep in mind during installation: if you want to switch from 22mm to 28mm, you will need new, larger stuurklemmen oversized bar mounts.

Geometry: Height, width, and backsweep

You don't control a motocross bike just by turning the handlebars. You shift your weight, load the footpegs, and find your balance. The geometry of your handlebar makes this maneuver easier or more difficult. Brands like Renthal and ProTaper offer countless variations.

A wider handlebar gives you more leverage and stability in corners. The 'backsweep' (how far the handlebar bends toward you) determines your riding position. A handlebar with less backsweep will force you into a more aggressive riding position with your elbows up. A hard-and-fast rule from the workshop: aluminum loses its structural integrity after a significant bend. If you bend a bent handlebar back straight, you create a weak spot. It will snap off on your next jump. That will cost you a lot of money and likely a trip to the emergency room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to the frequently asked questions.
